Looking for something acceptable to make a living is even harder than looking just to make a living.

A lot of people out there are struggling to just to make it from day to day, paycheck to paycheck. Now I "only" work four days a week, nine hours a day, tops. However I hate every hour of it (retail) and feel that my needs for autonomy and personal freedom are not being met. I've got a stable income that requires less of a time investment than many people out there, but find myself searching for a better alternative - some way that isn't just "playing the game". Some way that isn't just a scam, isn't back-breaking labor, and has some sense of meaning or at the least elicits neutral feelings each day. I don't want to endure walking out of my house every day with a heavy sigh and an impending sense of boredom and annoyance.

It seems as though I can't find a business that is both hiring and does not repel me almost instantly upon reading their website or application. I'm tired of reading page after page full of bullshit on how much of a "family" employees are. I'm tired of seeing half a dozen fake smiles of employees who are having "fun" with their work. I'm tired of the little questionnaires that ask pathetically transparent questions attempting to assess how submissive and familiar with the professional facade an individual is. I'm not content with the dehumanizing, dreadful grind of wage slavery.

I'm sure a lot of people will just chime in with the brilliant thoughts of, "Why not go to college? That's what I'm doing." The problem is, it is also absurdly difficult for me to think of any type of college major that I would want to return to pursue; is any field going to be both sufficiently interesting in the long term and be free of the sort of unhealthy employment atmosphere that most people suffer in? Let's also mention that college is laughably expensive - intentionally even, so as to compound the problem of America's supposedly non-existent social classes. I don't want to invest my life into working hopelessly at a marginally better job (assuming college even aids me here) because I'm up to my eyeballs in debt. In fact, I don't want to invest very much into Work at all. I merely want a peaceful, very low-stress way to make a living that allows me enough money to live comfortably with an acceptable amount of free time. This is a combination of things that I understand to be essentially impossible with the way that society currently works. It's not that I'm "lazy", as millions would no doubt jump to exclaim, it's that I'm not driven to live the same desperate lie as the overwhelming majority.

To be honest I am only posting this at all with the hope that it be cathartic - it's a microscopic flow of thoughts from the raging maelstrom of frustration and anger that lies within me. I really don't care whether anyone who reads this agrees or not, because perhaps an argument will serve to make that channel flow better. It might even make it more coherent.

I agree with this post in it's entirety. Though I wish I could contribute more to this than just this post, I do believe you stated everything perfectly. Things can only get worse in this world though, as I don't see this ever fixing itself, only becoming a stronger pestilence.
