Recently our protection comes at the cost of freedoms that have nothing to do with the threatening issues. The day will come when we are, in a very imposing sense, neither protected nor free.

If the matter were so simple as choosing between the two, I'd have to take freedom, however. Better to be at risk than already enslaved.

Freedom is better. Free peopel can and will protect themselves. Its one of the reasons we have guns in USA. If you Steal then get blown off the shot gun

the whole freedom thing is awsome most places dont even have freedom like the us does and he is right owning a gun has really helped in my part of town considering how we got robbed twice next time its a charm.....

Personally I think I might rephrase the original question as an inquiry into just how warped peoples' rationalizations will become in order to believe that they still have reasonable human freedoms while they remain completely unprotected from our very social structure and the evils it upholds. I don't believe the issue will immediately become a black and white choice between obvious freedoms and the protection from direct physical harm in the chaos vs. order sense, but rather between basic civil liberties and the interests of, say, corporate overlords and the increasingly large class agendas which make them possible. It will start in the name of national security, then prevent us from effectively communicating while stifling larger malcontent, so as to protect the interests of those with influence, and soon there will be no apparent threshold; meanwhile the balance of power will continue to shift, both obviously and subtly - through social indoctrination. You will find everyone around you thinking little of or being completely unaware of such aberrations, just as you can easily observe now.

I am full of hatred and a spiteful desire to see things change, but ultimately realize that we are doomed. Sorry, just had to bring another ray of sunshine into the topic.
