I just noticed something...you know how some pokemon have different appearances depending on gender or location ect...but they still only have one number in the pokedex right?

Like male Alakazams have bigger mustaches, Shellos have different colors. So why is Nidoran the only exception? Two numerical slots

Well, considering I don't know anything about pokemon past the gameboy advance titles, this is what I do know. Blame it on the original games, since those were when pokemon didn't have gender, except for Nidoran, thus taking 2 numerical slots. One for male, one or female. Nidoran male followed the evolution path towards Nidoking and the female Nidoqueen (I think the names are right.... Idk, it's been years since I've played any pokemon game, lol). It's always been a staple of the games, so I guess that's why they haven't seen fit to remove it.

Indeed. Wurmple does it quite well, evolving into both Silcoon & Cascoon while only taking up one slot.

Now i'm wondering how many pokemon have symbols in their names, like the Nidorans, Farfetch'd & Mime Jr.
